Coyote Wild

Earlier this month, I found myself obsessed with this article on coyotes living in DC. I recently acquired a “camtraptions” camera trap photography gizmo to be able to (hopefully) capture animals remotely, as if I were a real scientist or National Geographic photographer (I am neither). I had planned to use the camtraption on something like raccoons or bats — maybe even a beaver if I got really lucky — but I never imagined I could potentially capture megafauna like coyotes in DC.

I researched every neighborhood listserv that might have a mention of a coyote sighting. Many of the sightings seemed to center around the Tregaron Conservancy, in NW DC. So, around dawn last Saturday, I ventured out there. Of course, I didn’t see a coyote — and in my heart of hearts, I don’t think I really expected to. I did explore a lovely park that I had never seen before, though, that turned out to be a bit of a hidden wonder.

I have written to the author of the coyote article to see if I can learn more about/perhaps even help with research about urban coyotes in the area. In the meantime, it’s back to thinking about good locations for raccoon nighttime activity.
